Testing Fiber Optic Cabling & Systems for Loss.

Found this Blog of Twitter from Fluke, information how to set a reference when it comes to testing fiber optic cabling & systems you have to take into account the connection loss of a mated pair of test reference cord by calibrating your tester to 0 dB of loss. Remember when it comes to testing fiber cabling & systems for connection loss refers to the loss of a mated pair of connectors, it’s actually impossible to measure a single connector. To test the loss of the first connection, it must be mated to a similar, known quality connection. Link below to blog with information, on how to test for connection loss of a mated pair with a Fluke Networks CertiFiber Pro meter.

Information on Web Application Firewall (WAF) with Azure Front Door Service.

For this post I am going to talk about Web Application Firewall (WAF) with Azure Front Door service. WAF with Front Door can protect hosted on Azure Cloud services as well as those that are hosted on other clouds platforms and even host that are hosted on Premise. Network Administrator can create custom rules with the following features, rate limiting rules, request method-based access control, amd IP allow list and block list.

The way rate limiting rules works is a Network Administrator can create a control rule to limit abnormal high traffic from any User IP. Limits can be set, example of these limits can be a web requests allowed by a USER IP during a one-minute duration. This could be use to stop spamming on a web page or forum. The second one I would like to talk about is request method based access control, this feature will give Network Administrators to setup a control access list to their web applications based on HTTP request method such as Get, Put, and Head.

Last one I am going to talk about is IP allow list and block list. Control access to their web applications based on list of client IP addresses or IP address ranges, has support for IPv6 and IPv4 Link below to blog with more information and a video

Information On PHP Framework Tool "Slim."

Topic of this post will be Slim a PHP micro framework. Slim helps website developers by allowing them to quickly write simple/powerful web applications and application programming interfaces (API). Two of the features I would like to talk about is Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) Router and it's PSR-7 support.  How HTTP Routing works, a routing system works by mapping an HTTP request to a request handler based on the request method and path specified in the URL of the request. Slim provides a fast and powerful router that maps route callbacks to specific HTTP request methods and Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI). It does supports parameters and pattern matching. Next feature I would like to talk about is PSR-7 Support

PSR-7 is a set of common interfaces defined by PHP Framework Interop Group. These interfaces are representing HTTP messages, and URIs for use when communicating through HTTP. Slim supports any PSR-7 HTTP message implementation so you may inspect and manipulate HTTP message method, status, URI, headers, cookies, and body.

Information on Section 508 Compliance Standards.

As everyone knows, I am trying to improve me website development skills, this weekend I had the good fortune to go to DrupalCamp NJ, went to a session on website accessibility, tittle “Accessibility Making your Websites more Inclusive.” From this session I learn about section 508 compliance standards, will be the topic of this post. What is section 508 compliance?

Answer to this question beings in 1998, this when Congress amended the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that require Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities. Under this amended Section 508 compliance can to be, meaning agencies must give disabled employees and members of the public access to information comparable to the access available to others.

Also found out that the United State Access Board, who is responsible for developing Information and Communication Technology accessibility standards and incorporate them into regulations to govern federal procurement practices. The Access Board issued a final rule that updated accessibility requirements covered by Section 508, in January 2017 and refreshed guidelines for telecommunications equipment. The Access Board final ruling went into effect in January, 2018.

The rule updated and reorganized the Section 508 Standards & Guidelines in response to market trends and innovations in technology. The ruling also harmonized these requirements with other guidelines and standards both in the U.S. and abroad, including standards issued by the European Commission, and with the World Wide Web Consortium, and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, is a globally recognized voluntary consensus standard for web content and Communication Technology.

Information on Border Gateway Protocol.

Topic of today's post is the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP).  BGP use TCP as a reliable transport protocol to create TCP sessions with other BGP enabled switches, by using port number 179.  BGP is a path-vector protocol that provides routing information for autonomous systems on the Internet via its AS-Path attribute. With BGP version 4, now includes multi protocol extensions that allow BGP to carry routing information for IP multi cast routes and multiple Layer 3 protocol address families. What would happen if there multiple routes/AS-Paths to the same destination.

Let's say there multiple routes to the same destination, BGP therefore uses path attributes to decide how to route any traffic to specific networks. One way this done in BGP has multiple routes/AS-Paths, then origin is one of the factors in determining the preferred route, if the routes/AS-Paths is still available. The second attributes could be “shortest AS Path.” What this means is the path which traverses the least number of routers/switches, or AS-Paths wins.

Another attribute is Multi-exit discriminator. This makes it possible to tell a remote AS that if there are multiple exit points on to your network, a person can specific what exit point is preferred. With the use of this attributes makes BGP an inter domain routing protocol designed to provide loop-free routing links between organizations. An internal routing protocol, most often, Open Shortest Path First or Intermediate System to Intermediate System, is used to achieve fast convergence for internal routes, including IP addresses of other BGP routers. BGP is used to exchange routing information for the Internet and is the protocol used between Internet service providers (ISP).

Below are three link's with more information on BGP protocol, first Doc Wiki website, Enterprise Networking Planet website, and the last one is a configuration guide from Cisco.

Information on Two of Azure Cosmos DB Features, Multi-Model Database Service and Always On.

Azure Cosmos DB is Microsoft’s proprietary globally-distributed, multi-model database service launched back in May 2017. Azure Cosmos DB started as DocumentDB, was release 2014, then was update in 2015 to Azure’s NoSQL database service, and is now into what it is today, Cosmos DB. Microsoft goal is to build a database of the future and for it to last for many decades to come. Two of the strong features of Azure Cosmos DB is globally distributed, multi-model database service and always on availability.

Azure Cosmos DB is globally distributed, multi-model database service, gives Developers a choice of where their data can be stored in any number of Azure regions. This enables Developers to put the data where their users are, ensuring lowest possible latency. Developers will be able to add and remove regions to Azure Cosmos DB database, they will be able to add as many regions as they want, also check with Microsoft website Cosmos DB is now offered in 34 Azure regions. Next feature I would like to talk about is always on.

Always on meaning Developers Deploy their Database to any number of Azure regions for higher availability and better performance for the Users. The ensure “always on” read availability is, 99.99% for all single region database accounts, and for multi-region database accounts it is 99.999% read availability.

Azure Cosmos DB provides the best capabilities of both traditional relational and non-relational databases services, links below with more information about Azure Cosmos DB.

Protecting User's Against Data Breaches.

For this post I am going share a blog I found at CloudBerry Lab, talking about what user's need to do to protect them self against data breach. Data Breach has been a problem for may years, web, healthcare, and telecoms companies have been affected by this problem. Company like America Online, where AOL employee was charged with stealing screen names.

In June 2004, web company America Online had a worker who was arrested in a spam scheme. The worker took a list of 90 million AOL user account screen names, and then sold them, so they could be used to promote a Internet gambling business. Another example of a data breach from the healthcare industries was what happen to Affinity Health, back in 2009.

Affinity data breach was cause by office copier's they leased, and that was returned to the leasing company, might of contain personal information on its hard drive. Like many organizations, Affinity were not aware that newer copy machines on the time contained hard drives that need to be wiped when the lease was over. It was believed the copiers could have contain Affinity members social security numbers, dates of birth, and medical information. Last example is from the telecom industries is the AT&T iPad security breach of 2010.

AT&T data breach exposed user's email addresses, coupled with an associated ID used to authenticate the subscriber on AT&T's network, known as the ICC-ID. ICC-ID stands for integrated circuit card identifier and is used to identify the SIM cards that associate a mobile device with a particular user iPad. Making these iPads vulnerable to spam marketing and malicious hacking.

Below is a link to CloudBerry blog “Two Step Protection against Data Breach,” talking about implementing access management policies and protect data with encryption users to protect organizations against data breach.

Simple Beer Service is a Cloud Connected to a Kegerator.

Funny project I found online, "Simple Beer Service" is a cloud connected to a Kegerator that send data about the beer flow to an Amazon API Gateway. The idea is simple, you attach a Raspberry Pi to a kegerator, with the aid of a flow meter that will detect when a pour was happen, post the data to Amazon API Gateway, and display the data on a web page.

The project costs were under $1,250 to build, and cost $15.00 a month to run in a AWS account, link below to blog with information.

Types of Access Control Lists, for Cisco Routers IOS.

Cisco Routers IOS provides basic traffic filtering capabilities with Access Control Lists. Access Control Lists has many different types of filtering can be configured, as a network protocols, to filter the packets of those protocols as the packets pass through a router. The access lists filter network traffic by controlling whether routed packets are forwarded or blocked at the router's interfaces.

The way it works, router will look at each packet to determine whether to forward or drop the packet, on a criteria you specified within the access lists. Access list criteria could be the source address of the traffic, the destination address of the traffic, the upper-layer protocol, or other information. Note that sophisticated users can sometimes successfully evade or fool basic access lists because no authentication is required. There are many reasons to configure access lists, you can use access lists to restrict contents of routing, updates or to provide traffic flow control. Below is a list of Access Control Lists I found when looking up information for this post.

Examples of some of the Access Control Lists.

<001-099> IP Standard Access List

<100-199> IP Extended Access List

<200-299> Protect Type-Code Access List

<600-699> Appletalk Access List

<1000-1099> IPX SAP Access List

<1100-1199> Extended 48-bit MAC Address Access List

One of the most important reasons to configure access lists is to provide security for your network. You should use access lists to provide a basic level of security for accessing your network. If you do not configure access lists on your router, all packets passing through the router could be allowed onto all parts of your network.

Information on Flywheel Uninterruptible Power Supply Technology.

For this post I am going to talk about Flywheel Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Technology.  How Flywheel systems works is it store energy kinetically rather than chemically.  Instead of lead plates submerged in sulfuric acid, batteries, flywheels use the inertia of a spinning mass to store and regenerate power.  This is done by use a massive steel disk rotating at a relatively slow speed.  Example of a flywheel uninterruptible power supply, is the CAT UPS 750 (60Hz), made by Caterpillar Inc, also known as CAT.

CAT products are designed with superior quality, unsurpassed reliability, durability that allows for multiple rebuilds, ease of serviceability and reparability and outstanding support. The CAT UPS 750 (60Hz) lives up to the high standards that CAT sets for their product.

Some of the benefits of the CAT UPS 750, is it superior system design and the use of robust digital components throughout the system, that yield the most reliable and trouble-free uninterruptible power supply system currently on the market.  Also another benefit is the lower cost of ownership, compared to previous models.

What gives the CAT UPS 750 lower cost of ownership is the optimized system design. That reduces the maintenance requirements while offering improved performance and serviceability.  In addition, the high operating efficiency, cut down on heat dissipation & cooling cost, that leads to yearly savings versus traditional UPS products, reduces up front HVAC costs and electrical consumption over the life of the product.

Below is a link to Caterpillar product page for the CAT UPS 750 (60Hz), with more information.

Ransomware New Problem for the Cloud.

Ransomware is a type of malware that restricts access to the infected computer system in some way, and demands that the user pay a ransom to the malware operators to remove the restriction. Ransomware a new threat to cloud services, encrypting ransomware made a returned in the late 2013 with the help of CryptoLocker, also by using the Bitcoin digital currency platform to collect ransom money.
CryptoLocker is a trojan which targeted computers running Microsoft Windows. CryptoLocker typically spread in a network by gaining access as an attachment to a seemingly innocuous e-mail message, which appears to be sent by a legitimate company. For several months now, there has been reports of continuous waves of ransomware attacks, link below article at "Krebs on Security" website with more information.

Oracles Eleven Critical Cloud Predictions for 2016.

Blog I found over at Oracle “Eleven Critical Cloud Predictions for 2016.” The blog looks at what needs to happen in the Cloud market in the year to come.  One of the predictions is “cloud will reshape the application, platform, and infrastructure provider landscape.”

Meaning companies are going have start competing like Oracle does, in all three layers of the cloud, which are applications, platform, and infrastructure. Only a handful cloud computing services are active all three layers, that is going need to change in the future.  The other predictions I want to talk about from the blog is “infrastructure vendors without a cloud infrastructure option will be in trouble.”

Companies that do not have any Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offerings, will no longer be able to compete in infrastructure/data center  market. Below is link to blog with nine more predictions for the cloud market, with more information two above.
