Cisco WSA AsyncOS 8.1.0 Advanced Malware Protection (AMP) Update.

Cisco WSA AsyncOS 8.1.0 Advanced Malware Protection (AMP) update is here, AMP is a malware-defeating solution that enables malware detection and blocking, continuous analysis, and retrospective alerting. AMPS takes advantage of the vast Cisco cloud security intelligence networks, with two new features. One of those features is the Cloud Web Security Connector.

Cloud Web Security Connector offers a new configuration mode, which allows users to connect and direct traffic to Cisco Cloud Web Security for policy enforcement and threat defense. Cloud Web Security Connector mode is available through the Cisco Web Security Virtual Appliance as well as the physical Web Security appliance. The other new feature is the Kerberos Authentication.

Kerberos is a “pass through” authentication protocol for Windows, Mac OS X, and other operating systems. Many of today's operating systems no longer support NT LAN Manager (NTLM) or NTLM Single Sign-On (SSO) , Kerberos has become a very strong authentication protocol. There are two links below with more information about Cisco Advanced Malware Protection (AMP), one to a demo video from Cisco, another to a pdf download.

Diamond Dallas Page YOGA went to Rackspace for Web Hosting.

Diamond Dallas Page YOGA brand is working with Rackspace for there web hosting needs. Working with Rackspace Managed Cloud allowed the organization to focus on their core business and marketing rather than worry about management and hosting configuration.

One of the reason why Diamond Dallas Page YOGA went to Rackspace. Before Rackspace they had a single web server dedicated for there web traffic needs, at the time could handle a great deal of traffic, but soon organization learned they needed to add more infrastructure. Diamond Dallas made a appearance on WWE’s Monday Night Raw for an “Old School Raw” episode where they bring back wrestling greats. Dallas was allowed to promote Diamond Dallas Page YOGA on the show.

The exposure and internet traffics generated from the WWE's event caused they server to slow down, and then crash. The web site database was corrupted, the site was down for over six hours, and lead to massive amount of lost revenue. After this happen they turn to Rackspace, because the organization needed to prepare for an appearance on the TV show Shark Tank.

Rackspace assigned a Project Lead to prepare Diamond Dallas Page YOGA for the Shark Tank event, and brought in a partner, ScaleArc, which specializes in database caching and efficiency. ScaleArc is the pioneer in database traffic management software that simplifies scale out and scale up solution. Diamond Dallas Page YOGA infrastructure went from a single server, to 25 8GB Rackspace Performance Cloud Servers, and a database architecture consisted of four 8GB Performance Cloud Servers and two 30GB Performance Cloud Servers.

The day the Shark Tank episode aired there was 1,000 percent increase in traffic on the web site, without any problems to report. Web traffic increase from an average of 4,500 visitors per day to nearly 57,000. Link below to blog by Steve Yu, President, Diamond Dallas Page YOGA, posted on Rackspace web site with more information:

Cy7 ARM Storage Server.

Ambedded Technology was founded in1990, with the goal to make their customer’s ideas come true by providing knowledge and resources. One of Ambedded partnership is with Cynny, they built the CySeven, 0.5U/1U Rack Mount 7 Nodes ARM Micro Server, also know as the "Cy7 ARM Storage Server."

The Cy7 ARM Storage Server is designedto allow infinite scale computing, how this is done, it is designed with seven Processor Slots, for CYOne - pluggable independent computing units. This allows for no single points of failure. Each computing module is a network node of his own; internal interconnection keeps communication between the nodes, while outside/cluster connectivity is provided by two ethernet interfaces. When used for Cloud storage it scales linearly in capacity and speed with the addition of more units. It is Open Source friendly and fully Linux compatible, link below to a page with more information:

AOL.com Architecture evolved to 99.999% availability, 8 Million visitors per day, and 200,000 requests per second. What I was surprise about AOL.com is run it operations out of only three data centers, two are in Northern Virginia and one in California, all are owned and operated by AOL.

All three data centers see large amounts of internet traffic, but each of the data centers is sized to be able to handle the entire amount of internet traffic on its own. Even with the lost of two of these data center, the third one will be able maintain normal service. So when one data center is offline for maintenance, AOL is still able to have normal service, in case of failure of a second data center.

Found this blog at Ciphercloud.com some of the top internet companies call for government surveillance reforms to ensure greater cloud data privacy.  This week some of American top tech companies came together to resistance to government practices, and went public in a big way with an open letter to President Obama and Congress signed by Google, Microsoft, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Yahoo, and AOL.

To address problems caused by the alarming scope of government surveillance activities alleged by this year’s NSA spying revelations, these companies came together to call on the United State Government to take the following five actions taken from the Ciphercloud blog:

  1. Set “sensible limitations on their ability to compel service providers to disclose user data.” These limitations should, according to Reform Government Surveillance, preclude the indiscriminate collection of bulk data. This is especially vital for enterprises with data stored in multi-tenant clouds.
  2. Enforce “strong checks and balances” on the agencies charged with collecting data from cloud providers. Among these checks and balances, Reform Government Surveillance places particular emphasis on independent reviewing courts with public, adversarial process “so that the courts are accountable to an informed citizenry.”
  3. Create an environment of transparency around government surveillance programs and activities. Companies should be free “to publish the number and nature of government demands for user information,” Reform Government Surveillance states, and “should also promptly disclose this data publicly.”
  4. Permit data traffic across national borders, which Reform Government Surveillance calls “essential to a robust 21st century global economy.” Most of the major cloud service providers maintain data centers in multiple countries. Restrictive data residency regulations can severely restrict their ability to function at the levels customers require.
  5. Create a “robust, principled, and transparent framework to govern lawful requests for data across jurisdictions” to further support the international operations of major cloud companies and prevent what the Guardian‘s Dan Roberts and Jemima Kiss called “a balkanisation of the web as governments try to prevent internet companies from escaping overseas” and the companies themselves look for ways to protect their data and interests.

I would like to share something I found over on SQL Server Blog.  SQL Server Blog is the Official News from Microsoft’s Information Platform, the post I want to share is title “Boosting Transaction Performance in Windows Azure Virtual Machines with In-Memory OLTP.”  Blog talks about upcoming release of SQL Server 2014, and the significantly boost of performance of Online transaction processing (OLTP) workloads in Windows Azure Virtual Machines.

One of the topics covered is Windows Azure Virtual Machine Configuration, for best performance for In-Memory OLTP.  Blog recommends using a single storage account for all disks attached to the same virtual machine.  Another recommendation, do not use native operating system striping for storing the log of an In-Memory OLTP-enabled database. Link below with more examples for Virtual Machine Configuration, also in the blog there is information on scenarios for SQL Server In-Memory OLTP on a Windows Azure Virtual Machine:

Update on IBM lawsuit against Amazon.  U.S. Court of Federal Claims sided with Amazon and shut down IBM’s renewed effort to win the CIA contract.  Lawsuit started when Amazon Web Services received a $600 million contract to create a private cloud inside CIA data centers, IBM believed that Amazon.com’s bid did not meet the criteria for the CIA contract, and the contact should be rebid.

The CIA was asked to reopen the bidding process, which lead to Amazon taking legal action against the United States, last July. U.S. Court of Claims Judge Thomas Wheeler’s ruling in favor of Amazon, IBM will drop $600 million lawsuit.  Link below to an article on pulse2.com:
